The main house

‘Žw’θd—v•Ά‰»ΰu“n•Σ“@v

The main house was rebuilt in 1788 after a fire of the previous year.
It was a model house of farmers around here in Edo Period. It was, however, by far
Larger than those of common farmers, and it was made to show the status of the Watanabes.
Please look at those pillars and beams. Nowadays we can't get such big logs easily.
You can take a nap on a beam without being noticed. The wooden floor was used by servants and the matted floor by the master and his family. Usually the servants were not allowed to go into the matted floor, which is a little higher than the wooden floor.

The Watanabes were glad to have guests. So, please take off your shoes and come into the matted room and look at some treasures. This was the in Edo period. Many famous artists came and stayed. They left lots of masterpieces. Some of them are displayed here.
Now you can enjoy a typical Japanese scenary garden. It was designed and made by a gardener from Kyoto around the middle of Edo period. It has been preserved by yearly trimming for about 200years. It has been designated as a National Government.
